Celebrate the Journey

Fifteen years ago FG SQUARED opened its doors as Fellman and Gum Enterprises, a technology consultancy company co-founded to subsidize creating the prototype Easy Beader, an automated necklace beading machine. As we soon found out, it was much more lucrative to “ride the big wave” into the executive suites of global enterprises that were trying to harness the power of the web and digital media.

How far we’ve come.

Back then, the big wave was the Internet, a fairly nascent commercial technology and an exciting frontier to explore. Netscape Navigator 1.0 was the dominant web browser, Forrest Gump and The Lion King led the box office, OJ Simpson was the big-ticket news story, and three UT students co-founded FG SQUARED.

We’ve been through the wringer from those first forays into the business world to where we are now as a leading-edge website development and interactive marketing firm. What a long, strange road it’s been.

The one constant throughout the years has been how much we’ve changed. From bartering our Local Area Networking skills for office space in our first location to working on the cutting-edge of 3D technology to exploring the possibilities of social media, we’ve had to adopt new technologies and adapt to our environment to survive, which is entirely familiar in the marketing world. Maintaining the leading edge means having the courage to embrace and adopt the unfamiliar as a matter of course.

As I look ahead at all the possibilities and new and unfamiliar technology before me, I constantly remind myself and others to embrace change. It’s easy to be afraid of the unfamiliar, but if there’s one thing I know, it’s that giving in to fear can be paralyzing.  As John Wooden once said, “Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be.” Accept both the fear of failure and the uncertainty that inevitably accompanies change, and move forward despite them.  Once you have done this, you will probably look back and wonder what you were afraid of in the first place.

I’m not saying the road has been particularly smooth for FG SQUARED, but that was never my expectation as a true pioneer in the interactive industry.  I decided long ago to take a longer, more high-level view of things and stop along the way to savor the journey with my family and closest friends. While it’s important to have goals and to strive to achieve them, the journey itself is what gives achieving those goals depth and meaning.

Fifteen years have wrought changes in both my personal life and the life of FG SQUARED, and I am still crazy about what we do at FG SQUARED and the relationships we forge together. There is a tremendous amount of work that needs to be completed if we are going to maximize the positive impact we can have on the world, and I look forward to forging the road ahead for the next fifteen years.

Ready, set, go!

What? It’s been fifteen years already?

Posted by Debbie Byers on November 10th, 2009

Fifteen years ago today on November 10th, 1994 we opened our doors as Fellman and Gum Enterprises, and look where we are today…

Festivities are definitely in order!

In the coming weeks we’ll be celebrating our Crystal Anniversary the good old fashioned way: a walk down memory lane. We’ll be posting an interactive tribute to the journey from 1994-2009 in our 15th anniversary section, hosting some fun prize giveaways for all you Tweeters, sharing a motivational word [or two] from the CEO,  and taking a look back in a blog post from our Creative Director.

Keep an eye on our website for announcements and other fun stuff. In the immortal words of Kool and the Gang, “We gonna celebrate and party with you.”

P.S. Well-wishers welcome! Sign the FG SQUARED anniversary card.

Social Media Integration for B2B websites

Posted by Jason Fellman on October 12th, 2009

I’m frequently asked by B2B clients about how they can start using social media in a low risk and low cost manner.  There are many ways, of course, but one thing you can do is start by integrating some of the most popular (and relevant) social networks into your website’s user experience.  We used this concept with our own recent website redesign, and it’s worked out really well so far.

Our new site integrates multiple social media sites like Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr, to create a single, unified user experience.  Think of it as a free Content Management System that spreads the content out across multiple social media networks, yet it is all visible in one place at fg2.com.  For example, the majority of the images on the site are stored and served up via Flickr, videos from YouTube, etc.

We’re already experiencing the positive impact of this approach:

Increased Search Engine Visibility & Expanded Reach – Content loaded onto social media sites can be tagged for keywords and search engine optimization (SEO), ultimately bringing more targeted traffic back to the Web site.

Less Time & Lower Cost - Operational costs of maintaining a website are reduced, because the social media sites hosting the content are free platforms.  Content uploaded to sites like Flickr, Wordpress, Twitter and YouTube are integrated so that they will automatically update within the Web site, reducing the time spent maintaining a traditional Web site with fresh and relevant content.

Reduced Risk & More Trust - Some companies shy away from social media fearing that they will lack control of the conversations about their brand, but recent studies have shown that companies who maintain an active online presence are actually more trusted.  A site integrated with social media gives the company a way to establish a social media presence in an incremental and deliberate way, while still maintaining a comfortable amount of control.

More Meaningful User Interactions - Since users can find content across a variety of social networks in addition to the primary corporate site, they are more likely to encounter content that is relevant within the context of their unique web usage preferences and habits.

So there you have it…one idea for taking the plunge into using social media.  Have any other ideas to share with the group?

Courtney Ryan Buie: Austin’s Creative Class Personified

Posted by Mike Chapman on July 16th, 2009

One of my most often repeated themes is that Austin is the creative capital of the country. I didn’t make it up. I took it from Richard Florida’s book, “Rise of the Creative Class.” According to Florida, Austin comes out ahead of all the other U.S. cities for having the right mix of technology, talent and tolerance in our community. We have an abundance of techies of all kinds. We have very talented artists, musicians, actors and creatives. Combine that with some of the most tolerant people anywhere in the world, and you have Austin.

This past week we held the first organizational meeting of the Austin Interactive Initiative, an economic development initiative that a group of us are starting and hoping to recruit others to join. The purpose of the Aii is to find ways to let the world know just how much talent there actually is here in Austin and what a great place to business it is. Ultimately we want to convince outside entities to always have Austin on its short-list when consdering where to search out smart and talented people and companies for their interactive needs.

Of the many, really outstanding people who attended the meeting, in my view one attendee really epitomizes the qualities of tech, tolerance and talent that make us the creative capital – Courtney Ryan Buie.

Courtney has been an active member of the Austin music scene for years, she’s been highly involved with SXSW and has her own production company, Slip Productions. Courtney is an interactive marketing expert for FG SQUARED, putting her squarely in the mix of techies who are an important component of the interactive scene of Austin and critical to the economic development efforts taking shape in this space.

I’ve had the opportunity to spend some time getting to know Courtney. She really fits my image of what makes Austin’s creative talent so unique because of her empathy and tolerance. Courtney combines an ability to be truly good at business and still be a kind and generous person with a sincere and deep concern for others.

Many of us in Austin refer to our home as the “Oasis of Texas.” The reason that’s so true is because of the many, many people who could easily live anywhere else in the world and succeed wildly, but choose to stay in Austin and then are part of making it the great and very creative place that it is. For me, Courtney is individual proof that we are a collection of some of the smartest, most talented people anywhere.

Note – Courtney has a very special, four-legged friend who is battling cancer and needs our help. His name is Booker and you can read all about him by going to http://slipaustin.tumblr.com for info or paypal to crcooper@usa.com. Any help you can provide would be great.

3.3.09: Happy Square Root Day!

Posted by Courtney Steen on March 3rd, 2009

Mathematicians the world over rejoice this day as they expound upon the mathematical unity and appropriateness of Square Root Day. We here at FG SQUARED are rejoicing too, and think people need to explore the perfection of this date to really understand how wonderful and rare an opportunity it really is, even if it reveals that we are a gaggle of true-blue nerds, geeks, and weirdos. (Come one, you all knew already, didn’t you?) So come along with us and take some time today to relax and indulge those secret parts of yourself:

• Be square: It takes a lot of energy to constantly maintain an acceptable and popular level of coolness. Take a moment to reflect on your inner nerdiness today. What are you really good at but have to hide for fear of others discovering it and exploiting your weakness? Rejoice! Speak Klingon, crunch numbers, surf the internet, play Trivial Pursuit (well), or talk to someone about the latest and most interesting article in Scientific American. Today geekiness is a strength!

• Explore your roots: Get in touch with all those people who ever taught you math and thank them for giving you a base so you could really appreciate today.

• Wear square: Forget all those form-fitting, stifling clothes today and wear something boxy and bulky and eminently more comfortable.

• Square your food: Cut root veggies in squares (I got that from somewhere on the internet), make square cupcakes or pies (pi’s—3.14 or 31409—ha ha, more fun with math!), make up dishes with 3 equal ingredients or 9 ingredients, or make up drinks and cocktails with 3 equal ingredients or 9 ingredients (I smell an FG SCREWDRIVER or FG ICE TEA cocktail coming).

• Hold a random Shakespearean square dance: Make up silly names; collect some psychologically unsound royalty, a few seedy tavern owners, and some wenches and witches; generate some good Shakespeare-inspired insults (http://www.pangloss.com/seidel/shake_rule.html); put on an Elizabethan collars; form a square; and get down!

• Water some roots—nurture those plants!

• Run your own pants up a flagpole.

• Triple-dog-dare someone to do anything.

And while you’re enjoying yourself following these Square pursuits, remember to give a nod to both the Gregorian calendar and the math community for bringing us a chance to indulge in an entire day of random Square Root-ness.

Social Networking Saves the Planet?!

Posted by Jason Fellman on August 12th, 2008

Check out Planet Makeover. It’s a great concept that brings together business, entertainment, and social media for the sake of helping our environment.

Full disclosure: We’re building the social network and we’re a sponsor…but that’s a good thing, right?
