Courtney Ryan Buie: Austin’s Creative Class Personified

Posted by Mike Chapman on July 16th, 2009

One of my most often repeated themes is that Austin is the creative capital of the country. I didn’t make it up. I took it from Richard Florida’s book, “Rise of the Creative Class.” According to Florida, Austin comes out ahead of all the other U.S. cities for having the right mix of technology, talent and tolerance in our community. We have an abundance of techies of all kinds. We have very talented artists, musicians, actors and creatives. Combine that with some of the most tolerant people anywhere in the world, and you have Austin.

This past week we held the first organizational meeting of the Austin Interactive Initiative, an economic development initiative that a group of us are starting and hoping to recruit others to join. The purpose of the Aii is to find ways to let the world know just how much talent there actually is here in Austin and what a great place to business it is. Ultimately we want to convince outside entities to always have Austin on its short-list when consdering where to search out smart and talented people and companies for their interactive needs.

Of the many, really outstanding people who attended the meeting, in my view one attendee really epitomizes the qualities of tech, tolerance and talent that make us the creative capital – Courtney Ryan Buie.

Courtney has been an active member of the Austin music scene for years, she’s been highly involved with SXSW and has her own production company, Slip Productions. Courtney is an interactive marketing expert for FG SQUARED, putting her squarely in the mix of techies who are an important component of the interactive scene of Austin and critical to the economic development efforts taking shape in this space.

I’ve had the opportunity to spend some time getting to know Courtney. She really fits my image of what makes Austin’s creative talent so unique because of her empathy and tolerance. Courtney combines an ability to be truly good at business and still be a kind and generous person with a sincere and deep concern for others.

Many of us in Austin refer to our home as the “Oasis of Texas.” The reason that’s so true is because of the many, many people who could easily live anywhere else in the world and succeed wildly, but choose to stay in Austin and then are part of making it the great and very creative place that it is. For me, Courtney is individual proof that we are a collection of some of the smartest, most talented people anywhere.

Note – Courtney has a very special, four-legged friend who is battling cancer and needs our help. His name is Booker and you can read all about him by going to http://slipaustin.tumblr.com for info or paypal to crcooper@usa.com. Any help you can provide would be great.

Interactive Austin is a Platform for Sustainable Economic Development

Posted by Steve Golab on February 26th, 2009

speakingatia09_120x1201Normally, with the SXSW festival right around the corner, I would be gearing up right now to maximize my conference experience, and connect with the massive party that’ll be literally going on immediately outside of our front door.

However, with just over two weeks before SXSWi kicks off, I am still questioning whether I really have time to immerse myself in the interactive experience. The economic climate right now has me thinking it’s more important to keep a focus on the bottom line at FG SQUARED.

But the show must go on! My team is doing our part by hosting an FG SQUARED SXSW party at Lucky Lounge on Sunday evening, March 15, and we fg2_sxsw2have also pitched in sponsorship dollars for the Plutopia party hosted by EFF Austin and Social Web Strategies on Monday evening at Palmer Events Center, March 16. If you are in town, please come by and enjoy our fine spirits. I’ll be there enlisting guests to join us in this year’s Interactive Austin 2009 conference (#IA09 on Twitter) on Monday April 27 – just two months from now!

Interactive Austin 2009 is my passion right now. While the purpose of the conference is multifold, primarily the event becomes my annual effort to organize our community of interactive professionals to affect healthy economic development in Texas and for the FG SQUARED community of clients and partners. Please join me there!

I would especially enjoy seeing you at my Experience City panel session that makes up part of the afternoon leadership track. I am excited to be working together with a few of the emerging young leaders here locally, namely Bijoy Goswami (Bootstrap Austin) and Heather McKissick (Leadership Austin).

Here is an overview of my panel session with Bijoy and Heather:

Experience City – making Austin the hub for social media

In the Lone Star State’s unpretentious capital city, you’re likely to find more guitarists than gunslingers, but you will find the ten-gallon hats if you look hard enough.

It’s easy to see we are a city of many and varied scenes: vibrant communities around music, film, technology, academia, art, environmentalism, and countless others. Part of what makes Austin special is how open and accessible these scenes are. With minimal history or prior social capital, anyone can engage, all are welcome, and creating a new scene is as simple as properly directing one’s enthusiasm.

In this session, we’ll explore how the components of community, entrepreneurism, experience, and leadership combine to create scenes and experiences — including an exploration of Austin’s Interactive Scene. What are its unique attributes, and who is leading the charge around making the Interactive Scene in Austin as vibrant as the others?

A graphic recorder will be present to Mind Map the freeform open discussion. Mind Mapping contributes to a more transparent discussion structure and stimulates interaction between (and among) panel and audience participants.

Although this only the second year for the conference, we are planning for a sell out, so get your tickets now. Once you buy a ticket you will be eligible to participate in a variety on IA09 social media contests going on prior to the show. Full details will be released on Twitter in the coming few weeks.

SXSW Festival Scheduler Rocks the User Experience

Posted by Steve Golab on March 10th, 2008

Late Friday morning, the South by Southwest Festival officially kicked off here in Austin. It’s that crazy time of year when aspiring rock stars, film makers, internet strategists, and other hipsters of every stripe converge into the downtown Austin entertainment district. Being the brainiac that I am, this year I decided to arrive twenty minutes early, so I was one of the first in line. Moments after I arrived, the line was snaking around the corner of the wide convention hall. Wow, was I relieved to be near the front, so I could quickly get back to my office across the street.

For those of you attending the festival, check out http://sched.org/sxsw2008/. It’s a slick and interactive event marketing tool that allows attendees to quickly make their schedule and share it with others.

For instance, here is my schedule: http://sched.org/sxsw2008/steve_golab. If you want to meet me at the event, this will give you an idea where you’ll be likely to find me. I doubt I’ll actually stick to the schedule, though, and also I may be changing it around as the event goes on.

If you are not heading to the festival this year, I still encourage you to check out http://sched.org/sxsw2008/ and http://sched.org/sxsw2008/steve_golab. This web-based scheduling tool is elegant and also brings high impact user experience of sorts. Try to use it, you’ll see what I mean. From an event marketer’s perspective, the tool allows exhibitors, producers, and sponsors to measure participant interest in real-time and better forecast where the crowds will be. If I had more time, I could probably rattle off eighty other benefits possible with the right social media marketing strategy in place. The tool itself is an attraction for the event and I bet it wins honors this year for the Interactive Awards. Rock on!
